When you're launching a new site, migrating, or updating your website, security is likely high on your priority list. The unfortunate truth is that there are reasons why small and medium businesses, even startups, need to be as concerned about their site security as a global brand. The headlines may focus on brands like Target and Sony, but that's only because startups and small companies don't have enough traction to get coverage. In fact, about 43% of cyber attacks on small businesses involve many things like network security gaps and code injection into websites. When network and website security is breached, it takes an average of 197 days for most businesses to detect it. A lot of damage can be done in this time frame, which is why cybercrime casualties continue to rise. According to information shared by Trustwave, almost $600 billion is lost to Internet businesses every year.

Since e-commerce sites usually deal with sensitive user data, the loss from a security breach Buy Special Marketing Data can be significant. So don't think you're safe just because you're managing a simple website. Trustwave's 2018 Global Security Report found that 100% of applications tested revealed at least one security vulnerability, with an average of 11 vulnerabilities per application. Almost in most cases, hackers use scripts that extensively scan websites for common vulnerabilities. Unless they're specifically looking for a challenge, they'll usually use the least vulnerable for quick access. According to a study by Symantec, over the past three years, more than 3/4 of the websites scanned had unpatched vulnerabilities. 15% of which were considered important in 2015. When hackers scan sites for vulnerabilities, there is no distinction between the size or age of the business. What causes many small businesses to be targeted is that small business owners typically do not prioritize security.

Also, unlike large companies, they do not have the budget to establish an IT department that can regularly monitor secure and updated systems. According to Chris Eggleston, most hackers look for three things when attacking a website: 1- SMTP server hijacking : They upload a script that uses your SMTP server to send spam emails to hundreds of emails daily. This will continue until your hosting provider shuts down the SMTP server. Stealing Your Website Traffic: They redirect traffic from search engines to their money making websites. These sites are built with your site's profile and logo, so that visitors think they are on your site. Malware Distribution: Have you ever visited a website that displays a message saying you need to update your Flash Player? When you click on it, it will lead to a virus on your computer. This is how the virus spreads through hacked websites.
